How did you end up in the nightlife and its staging?
I have always been a very restless person and I grew up in an environment of artists ,where creativity has accompanied me.I have tried to search for innovation in my projects ; these reasons and the need for eating ,made me bet on the” boite”, nightclubs today, non existent in the world at the end of the 60s.
What kind of sensations do you try to transmit in your work?
Anyone who has had the opportunity to come to any of my premises can verify that I am a great lover of architecture and that I take care of even the smallest details .I always look for perfection and I look after all of them with much affection, trying to transmit that the people feel as in their own home . I am closer to the austerity rather than to all the glitz and I always try to develop the projects in accordance with the environment in which they are created.
Tell me 3 projects that the recall or visit produce great satisfaction on you:
My first Pacha ,born in Sitges, which was an old rustic farmhouse now remodelled,is still one of the projects I fondly remember as it was the beginning of many stories that have happened later. Then,Pacha Madrid ,an old theatre converted into the most emblematic disco of the 80s,and which drove the brand to unexpected levels. Finally ,Pacha Ibiza,is perhaps my greatest story ,a project taken care of to its max ,born from the illusion ,in which I put all my effort each day. Apart from all of these,I could highlight many others as I have done projects that I could mention ;the list is long with a track record as mine.
Which is the biggest difficulty that an Architect of the night has to face?
Perhaps life itself and all its challenges… to keep on creating unique spaces with personality, apart from knowing how to find the appropriate places in which I am allowed to set all my creativity free. We must take risks in order to get better.
Tell me 3 spaces in Ibiza you would like to remodel:
I feel a great love for the island and I think that especially the city of Ibiza is framed in a wrong way .Most part of the local architecture has not been preserved, and always for the same reasons; the enrichment of some people who do not foresee the future and only think about their own pocket. I have contributed with ideas to the administration on several occasions but there are many people who listen and very few who do something.
Can you be creative and innovative while respecting the essence of a rustic farmhouse?
Pacha Ibiza is a clear example ,born from an idea along with my already deceased friend ,Jorge Goula. We wanted to build a place which would coincide better with the surroundings ,and so much so ,that nowadays many people still believe that it originally was a rustic farmhouse.
What do you expect from the materials used in your projects?
Quality is always present in my projects ,no matter what material I use,if it is wood or cement.
I always try to introduce typical materials of the place ,without having to import them from another place.
Imagine you are going to build your family house for the rest of your life.Where would you make it and what materials would you use for paving and coating?
I am fortunate to have been able to make some of my objectives come true and one of them is my home .Years ago I bought a small, over 300 year old house ,near Ibiza town .Little by little I have been shaping it ,while respecting the original architecture .The materials I have used are mainly pine pallets ,pavements of clay tiles and catalan stoneware and coatings of cement with a rustic aspect to achieve the desired shape as it is today.
Where would you like Ibiza to be heading to …on a urban and architectural level?
The respect to its original essence would be very suitable ,or at least if we continue building ,to be done in a consistent manner with the environment .We have an emblematic city as Dalt Vila ,which should be the center of inspiration. There are many buildings that should disappear or try to improve their appearance ,but this is the job of the administration and it is absolutely not in the game .
